Yello. In case anybody is still checking back to see if I'm still alive.
Just a quick update, this.
I have settled in nicely and kinda got my act together. For now.
I'm still waiting for Bangalore to woo me into its awesomeness, though.
I have started work on the new header and the makeover that has been pending for more than a month
*hides face in shame* But HEY, I grew up and got a job, so I'm allowed okay? *glares*
Gimme a week more and I shall be back with as much a bang as I can summon up considering this is my nth arrival.
Huge thanks to all those who wished me luck in the last post, means a lot to know that so many people are supportive. Also, when I said it was time to rest "Confessions..." I just thought I should change the name of the blog, not give up blogging altogether OR start a new one without telling you guys - just clearing up the confusion. This place means too much to me to actually abandon (though I have tried a few times *sheepish grin*).
I leave you with a question:
Why, in the name of all things sacred, do people (Indians) have fake accents? Is it because they have confidence issues? Image issues? Or something else altogether?? Enlighten me, nice people.
And, no, the title has nothing to do with the post, whatsoever :P

feeling aati hai accent se, AYE MAITE?
ReplyDeleteWhat nonsense feeling, I say :P Such put-ons and fakes such people sound like!
DeleteAha, would ya look at who woke up from the grave and is giving us a huller.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new job, hope its to your liking.
As for the accent riddle, maybe they work at a Call Center where they have to speak in a different accent all day and are finding it difficult to phase it out.
Get back into the groove already(wrt to the posts), can't wait to start reading what you have to write.
Cheers :)
:P
DeleteIt is:) Very much so, thank you :)
The person in question was in the U.K for three months of training. That's where the accent comes from. I rest my case.
:)
Yay you popped back :) You grew up and got a job, you're entitled to do anything you want really. I didn't know they faked accents. I am now wondering too. There must be some reason.
ReplyDeleteSome Indians are such wannabes, you wouldn't believe it :P
DeleteAaaahh finally settling in.. Nice :D
ReplyDeleteFake accents.. confidence issues or to draw attention.. could be anything really :P
YOU! We need to talk.
DeleteI've been trying. You don't respond! :/
DeleteOh wheeeeeeeeee!
ReplyDeleteHave fun in B'lore and new role and all :P
sooooper doooper happy to know that the previous post was just about the title :))
Phew!
No idea about accents, really. They irk me so much. I kind of always thought it was to do with building a Hey-I-can-speak-english-like-phoreners-and-elizabeth-is-my-grandmother thingy. Didn't think of it as having anything to do with confidence. Maybe, now that you say it, it does (in some cases).
Thanks :)
DeleteElizabeth is my grandmother:D ROFL..
Welcome back...
ReplyDeleteI myself have been off thee radar since the fag end of 2011. Got married you see :D
Indians? Fake accents? Salman Khan isn't the only Indian y'know?
Cheers
CRD
Congratulations!! More appropriate to wish you by mail, so I'll do that:)
DeleteAnd welcome back to the blogger world as well...
:P
Hello babe :) there you are. May Banglore bestow its pollution filled awesomeness on you! I am also thinking of a name change. How do you do all this header stuff :) shabba, i lack patience to comb my hair.
ReplyDeleteB'lore already has :P
DeleteAnd I'm a picture/photographwhore :P That's where the patience comes from :D
Give Bangalore some time...and it will woo you alright! :-)
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite cities, have spent a memorable couple of years there.
P.S - Been to Forum Mall yet? :-P
That is like an universal address of a hangout place there.!
:D Only time will tell...
DeleteP.S: That's the ONLY place I have been to till now :D
Congrats on the new job! Allow me to let you in on a secret. I know saying this isn't going to make me very popular, but... I really don't find Bangalore to be that awesome. At least not as much as people make it out to be. :D Oh well, but that's just me. I hope you make a wonderful home for yourself here and also some amazing memories.
ReplyDeleteAs for the fake accents, well, English isn't really our native language, and many are conscious about not being able to speak well. So maybe it's a cover up or sign of insecurity?
Thank you, Madame :) Hopefully, I will :)
DeleteMaybe. That's an interesting perspective..
Yello gurl:) welcome back. Hope u like B'lore. One cute city. Awaiting ur blog's makeover. Keep 'em posts coming:) Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThank you Madame :)
DeleteGlad that you are kinda settled in your new life. Eagerly waiting for your 'back with a bang' comeback.
ReplyDeleteAbout the fake accent. I think it's a mix of inferiority complex, a desire to sound posh, and ignorance that one is sounding like a total ass.
Cheers to new things!
Lol, I like that... Your description of the accent :D
DeleteCheers, I say :)
Oh thank god you're not going!Yay!
ReplyDeleteI hear you PVee. :D
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Blasphemous Aesthete
Man of very few words, you are :D
DeleteGood to know that you are not gonna go gayab from this space. Am really bad with names, warna I would have suggested something for the naamkaran :-).
ReplyDeleteAbout the accents, I think it is a way to differentiate themselves from the junta and to try to get some sort of brownie points...although they hardly realize that they cannot fool anybody by pulling such stunts.
Waise...I must say that have met so many Indians with non-Indian accents, but they are not necessarily fake. You know, aajkal after almost 5 years here, my friends (and sometimes me too) have unconciously started rounding the 'r' sound in the Canadian way. Some accents like this tend to creep into your vocabulary when you spend the whole day at work conversing with people from one (predominant but different from your own) background. Also, people who have grown up during their school years outside India will definitely have a way different accent.
:) Exactly. They just ending sounding so fake.
DeleteI was talking about those Indians who have lived abroad for a nanosecond and develop accents. People who live there, I understand and its completely genuine.
I am living in Bangalore! WE SHOULD SO MEET! :D :D :D :D Soumya too! Please? :D
ReplyDeleteI am glad you sound so much better :) Trust me, I have begun to feel life goes on and its a choice to go on with it or hang behind. :)
To new beginnings. :)
I'll inbox you my number, milady.. Lets make plans :)
Delete:) That seems so apt... go on or hang behind. I s'pose I have taken the first step forward. Thank you..
Glad that 'putting confessions to rest' had this meaning! ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd great to know you have settled in well though I am not pretty sure about the when, where, what or how.
And on accents, I am waiting for someone to enlighten me. My favourite is Malayalam interspersed with so much grammatically wrong and mispronounced English that its neither English nor Malayalam. And a horrible sing-song tone to go with it. :D
I didn't mean to it sound quite like that :P
DeleteGot a job and moved to B'lore. When is 'a month now' and how would be 'by bus' :D;)
LOL.. we have a ball faking a 'mellu' accent at the office..
Faking it..hmmmm..
DeleteYou couldn't possibly think I have a real one *horrors*
DeleteWouldn't bother me in the least, even if you had :P
Delete(That was a 'jock') :P
:D:P
DeleteOho... Bangalore is it? One of my fav cities. Yenjoyyyy! And as for youe question, for some wierd reason, we seem to think a fake accent automatically entitles a second glance - and they are right! Every time I hear an accent between Timbaktoo and Walt Disney, I actually turn to look at the noncompoop - sheer misunderstanding!
ReplyDeleteYou forgot the maadi :P
DeleteI know right?! Same reaction, I even used the same word last week to a friend!! Nincompoop is exactly right for a person who fakes an accent :/
Definitely :) Let me know when you come down <3:)
ReplyDeletelooking forward to your new header! i changed mine as well.
ReplyDeleteand the question you asked can be applied to Pakistanis too. sigh.
Thanks Katt.
DeleteI'm sure it does :/
Pee Vee darling! Congratulations on your new job!! Do expect someone in your office to come and meet ya.. ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you!! Womaigad you set a manager on me :P
DeleteYou know, they say tht right ppl wind up with the wrong ppl cos the wrong ppl say the right things :)....
ReplyDeletefake accents, i guess, r one of those things :)
A typical RAJ comment, I say :D
DeleteWaiting for your glorious comeback darling, Hope the city is treating you fine :) And as for the answer to your question, my opinion would be maybe the tendency to reflect others and stage a better image. I am not stereotyping but have seen this attitude is a lot of places!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Keirthana
As of now, yes :) B'lore has yet to show me a real good time though :D
DeleteThat's the attitude I am talking about, why though?
Welcome to Bangalore Bloggers club :)
ReplyDeleteI would be surprised if the weather hasn't wooed you yet.
Fake accent - what can I say about it other than I got that mate.
Thank you :)
DeleteOh that I MUST mention, the weather is DIVINE!! :D
:P
Really happy to know you are not Gone.. :). And as for accents, I think I pick up accents way too quickly for my own good. I used to speak Malayalam with a Thrissur accent , but now I think I talk with a Trivandrum accent since my husband is from there, and after living 3 years in Minneapolis, I think my English might be getting that American accent too..But initially I had huge problems communicating , because of my Indian accent (what is considered normal in Indian corporate world), and I'm extremely grateful to the people here who never once laughed at me. So I decided that I will never laugh at another person's accent , regardless of whether it is fake or real or Hindi, or Chinese or Mallu.
ReplyDeleteThat's not the accent I am talking about, Madame :) I was asking about the put-on accents. The ones that come after spending less that a second abroad and coming back to India like one is the Queen's direct progeny.
DeleteWell, I visited Bangalore for the first time last year and the majority of my time there was spent on the roads while the taxi driver jostled with the traffic. So, I particularly didn't enjoy the city. Maybe it'll need more visits to change my opinion. Hope it is treating you well. :-)
ReplyDeleteAs for the accent thing, here's what I have realised from observing people :
Usually people pick up accents when they move to a new place in order to hide the fact that they are immigrants and to try to blend with the local public. I've seen it happenning between different states in India quite often.
But the fake accent you mentioned about is rather a funny thing. Like when an Indian lands in the United States, the changed accent comes automatically. The usual 'New York' is pronounced as 'Nuu Yawwkk'. :D We quickly pick up how the Americans don't touch their palates by the tip of their tongues while pronouncing 'r'.
But when an Indian returns to India and still keeps the fake accent, it can be due to one of two reasons.
1. He or she takes up the accent so subconsciously that it is forgotten that they are back home and the accent is no longer needed. Such cases, though few, return to their original Indian accent sooner or later.
2. The show-offs, who think a fake accent is the easiest and better way to show that they had been to 'phoren' rather than picking out their passports and showing the visa to their colleagues. :P And amazingly, this type of accent can be picked up by merely talking to a visiting foreigner instead of actually going abroad too. :D
Returning to your blog after a long time as I hadn't been reading much during the past few months. :-)
There you are! Come back soon soon soon.
ReplyDeleteAww...:)
DeleteTo be honest, your title wooed me! :D
ReplyDeleteWelcome back!
And happy settling into the city that seems to make everyone fall in love with it! :)
Haha... I hope atleast one person would be misguided :P thank you!!
